SPORTS’ GREATEST MOMENTS

Black and white drawing of American football players in action, wearing helmets and uniforms, with one player holding the football.

Welcome, my name is Larry Casper. I am an artist living in Naperville, Illinois with my wife, Trish and my son, Brian. I displayed a knack for drawing at an early age. I remember on my kindergarten report card the teacher noted that I enjoyed doing artwork. Beyond taking required art classes in school, I have received no further art instruction, so for the most part I am a self-taught artist. My father also possessed some artistic ability. In my father’s high school yearbook, I read that his goal was to become the next Walt Disney. Of course, that never happened. My father and I both fell prey to the starving artist stereotype and never pursued an artistic career. Persuaded by the starving artist stereotype and the advice of others, I entered the more financially secure business world. Over the years, I continued to sketch and draw and occasionally sell my artwork. I have also begun to accept commissions. Now that I am approaching my retirement, I wish to devote my time and energy to an artistic career and sell some of the work I have done over the years.

My passion is to draw sports figures within their element depicted in dynamic action. While taking a history of art and architecture course in college, (required humanities course for a business degree, I never saw the connection) I saw Bernini’s statue of David launching the rock that slew Goliath. I was captivated by the coiled and turning figure of David and I felt this statue conveyed a sense of action and energy, leaving me with the desire to depict this action in my artwork. The medium I currently work in is pen and ink. I have posted my work your review. I feel that it represents my best work. I hope you will also find these drawings appealing. Since I am from the Chicago area, you will find that most of the artwork is based on Chicago sports figures. If I achieve any measure of success with the artwork currently on display, I plan on expanding the subject matter to global sports figures. Please leave thoughts, suggestions, comments and insights as they will be read and much appreciated and thanks for visiting.
